Lots Wife
Lot’s Wife
(Genesis 19:15-26)
Not even the outcry of an angel
could keep her eyes from turning back.
With impending doom about to bring
the cities down to ashes, she may
have thought of something left behind –
a dress, a ring, a cherished keepsake –
she could not live without, and so she
turned and looked, while ahead the others,
still caught in the fear of the angel’s voice,
flew into the distance with feet like
beating wings of flushed-out birds, while
hers grew heavy with the weight of salt.
