Loss comes from
Letting go of that thing
You’ve held onto for far too long
Clinging to the edges of garments
The rims of plates and cups
The borders of hand-me-down
Boots, blankets, quilts
Powerful pieces of yesterday
Reaching into tomorrow
With a strength that feels
Like fierce truth layered with
Warm rays of light and laughter
Love that lives in a reminiscence
Loss comes from
Clinging too tightly to that thing
You should have let go of long ago
Before the rust and dust and lust
Allowed it’s surface to become stained
With tears, fears and years of pain
Sorrows flow through the crimson veins
Of details and stories that whisper
Hues of clarity, painted vibrantly
With brilliant dreams and rays of peace
Breathing through the sunrise
Lighting the dewdrops that begin to let go
Of the leaves and petals they’ve been
Gripping so desperate to remain
On the surface of that lively stem
Loss comes from
The longing of a heart to keep beating
In rhythm with the one who it’s pleading
To share its life with, forever, always
Alive to the dance that breaks out
In waves of sapphire and emerald
Splashing up on beaches with passion
Enthusiastic and dreaming of the day
When there will never be another
Going away, leaving, loss
Of the feeling that is
A gift of intimacy, sensitive
A thrilling wonder, a silent sensation
Making love to the past
With an embrace from the here and now
