L'Orgue De La Mer - the Sea Organ

Listen to poem:
L’orgue de la mer - The Sea Organ Née à l’horizon Born on the horizon où se meurt le soleil where the sun dies ses grandes vagues pleurent her large waves weep et s’écrasent sur les marches and crash on the steps où l’orgue de la mer chante where the sea organ sings le va et vient des marées the coming and goings of her tides plein d’accords mystérieux d’air et d’eau filled with mysterious chords of air and water. The Sea Organ is located in Zadar, Croatia. Below the steps you see in the above picture there's a system of tubes and a resonating cavity that turn the site into a musical instrument when the waves come crashing in.

Thank your Maria for your visit; I am glad to see you are quite a world traveler. So am I, so who knows, one day we may meet on foreign soil:)

Thanks Anne-Marie. I really enjoyed the recording. French is such a lovely sounding language. I can speak Spanish but not French. However, they seem to be very similar. I would love to learn French too. And, again...I really like this poem.

Hola, Carole you are right, they are very similar. Perhaps you could write a poem in both Spanish and English. That would be great.

Wow! I would love to hear this. I bet it really does sound "mysterious". Interesting poem. I wish I could hear you read this in French, Anne-Marie. (hint, hint)

Thank you so much for your delightful comments Carole . . . the recording is in, but it's wholly due to the technical help and patience of my daughter:)

I don't get notifications of reply comments but I came back and saw what you asked me (your messages to people are cutting off) Anyway, Dietrich is my husband's name and if I have German in me, it's very little. I think I have a bit of Scandinavian and mostly Irish/Scotch, Welsh and English.

Thank you Andrea. You mentioned writing poetry in Spanish so I thought you perhaps had a hispanic background:)

Bonsoir Lisa, you always have the most amazingly generous comments and they are greatly appreciated. I was a Foreign Language H.S. teacher for many years, and I loved it. I guess some of it still transpires:)

I find it rather fascinating that you described the lofty "music" created by air and water in both french and English, yet everyone has focused on the languages rather than sentiment conveyed. Aloha!

Bonjour Rico and thank you for your comments. I guess many people are intrigued because it is in both languages.

the poem made me think of getting away from all that city life and seeing France and smelling the sea - with a blanket and a hot drink

Verlecia let's go! I'm tired of this city life too, even though i'm cozying up in a suburb . . . Growing up, I would spend part of the summer camping w/my family by the sea, practically 24/7 outside and the bugs were almost nonexistent:)

wow, it was so cool to see you do it in both languages. I only have maybe two poems I ever wrote in Spanish. Maybe one day I should put one of them up, with both versions like you did here! Great description of this special place by the sea.

Merci beaucoup, Andrea. I hope you will one day find the time to translate them because it would be great to read poetry in both Spanish & English. Dietrich sounds German; do you have a Spanish background?

Anne-Marie, j'aime ça! I love it that you, just like I did, put your poem there in two languages :) And both are beautiful, I cannot choose! Bonne journée :)

I just read 'Juventud'; that was not an easy poem to translate and, Darren, you did an extraordinary job. It takes a great poet to translate another great poet. Take your bow young man like Lisa would say because you are simply brilliant.

Found you! By the way, if you like translations, I once did one with a poem of Neruda, the same way as with my own bilingual poem? If you're interested: https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/youth___after_pablo_neruda_878958

I started publishing last December on a French site called 'la passion des poèmes' but I found it so hard to publish on 2 sites & comment at once, that I had to make a choice. I chose this site. I still sometimes comment on the French site but rarely publish anymore. If you go on LPDP, under 'recherche' put libellules w/an 's' & I should pop up:)

I never did publish on other sites, but just for fun I started doing that a few days ago, to see what the difference is between poetry sites. PoetrySoup was my first site to post my poems, I was getting curious :) You do? What site do you publish on?

Merci, Darren. I loved your poem and I felt it was time for me to finally write one in both languages. When I published lyrics in French 'Pour un instant' to Yiruma's music, I realized I also wanted to do an English version but a systematic translation wouldn't fit the music so I came up w/Springtime in the Snow & I came here. Est-ce que toi aussi tu publies sur un autre site?

Absolutely beautiful and hypnotic this morning Anne Marie. I love the analogy of the sea organ, the melodic instrument that plays the most soothing music for us to hear. The two languages is a plus for me, it just gives this piece a deeper dimension and tone. Really gorgeous my friend.

Bonjour Chris, I am glad you liked it. There is actually a sea organ in Zadar, Croatia. I was trying to upload a picture but was having internet problems probably due to a passing hail storm
