Long Shadows
Feeling frightened, hungry, and cold,
you cruise the streets, your head hung low.
'Cause your body is bought and sold,
you search faces for those you know.
Cash casts long shadows on the street;
in a city that preys on trust.
And when innocence needs to eat;
morality's sold for a crust.
Depression seeks to entrap you;
within the role of, let's pretend.
Because those you trust are all new,
you curse fate for lack of a friend.
Dreams take an emotional toll;
nightmares come, and you cannot run.
And with hope tucked into your soul,
you fight sleep till the night is done.
Despite your fears and tears, you've won
a reprieve, surviving the night.
And waking to a rising sun;
confidence grows within its light.
