Lilacs

I always bought a big bouquet Of lilacs every Mothers’ Day. My mother loved their sweet perfume Which wafted over every room. There were no flowers other days To spruce things up with bright displays, Just once a year to celebrate A date for those who procreate. Today, the lilacs’ cloying scent Reminds me of when I’d present A bunch for which I’d proudly paid On my own Mothers’ Day crusade. I did it more for me than her; Were she alive, she might concur For giving them, I felt more pride Than what, to her, they could provide.

My mother passed away 3 years ago at almost 97! She did like my brother and me to buy her flowers/ Why? Because they died too quickly, so she preferred plastic flowers! The lilac has an ancient history going back to Persia where it was, oddly viewed as more suitable to a man than a woman. Lovely tribute to your mother. / M

It is always better to give than to recieve. Like you, especially when overseas, I would make sure to send her some. It is just a small token, yet means so much to both.

A very tender write, Ilene. Having them only once a year made them all the more special to both of you.
