Letting Go of the Past

It would take some time
For me to see
The way your pain
Was haunting even me
It would take some sorrow
Some sadness too
For me to realize
That my love didn’t change you
It would take some grief
Sorrow and fear
For me to let go of
The feelings we’d shared
It would take some worry
Some stress and anxiety
For me to finally come to
A peace where I could rest
It would take some years
Some darkness and tears
For me to finally accept the truth
That my heart didn’t return to you
It would take some mourning
Some weeping and regret
For me to dissolve the black
That had been the color I felt
It would take some anguish
Some trouble within my soul
For me to finally learn my lesson
That my love wasn’t a cure all
It would take some seasons
Some living in a shell
For me to finally give in to
The assurance that I could love again
It would take some joy
Some affection from a heart so loving
To find relief and comfort
From the past that still wants to haunt me
It would take some time
But mostly I can say
As the years have defined me
The woman who still loves entirely
With a heart that knows
Love is the very best answer
To the questions that bring doubt
Worry and confusion
Love is the breath from heaven
Where my soul looks for blessings
Sent to light up the darkness
That pain and sorrow might cause me
It would take some time…
But over the years I’ve decided
Love is the only way
To seek God when I pray
And reach out to others with faith
That this love will always defend
The heart so that it sings
Songs of hope, faith and love
Sent down from God above!
