Notes About The Poem

For Tania Kitchin's 'End of Summer, Beginning of Fall Tanka' Poetry Contest

#15 on top new poems list as of Aug 28, 2026

late summer baby

summer dog days wane
     and sunflowers fade away
melancholy winds
    sweep my blooming blue asters
one more birthday come and gone

Sometimes birthdays can be kind of sad, but it is nice to be alive and up somewhat taking care of myself so many who make it to this age are no longer able to care for themselves at my age. Of course, you have so many really healthy years to go before you reach my age. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us which reads like a good contender to me. Way to go. 👏✍️. Sara K.

So pretty, so true and melancholy is the word. I don't think there's any avoiding it except to change our channel. CayCay
