Las Animas Returns

Las Animas Returns Light intones creeping darkness in unfinished overtures Of fallen leaves scraping against a broken path Like distant footsteps faintly heard in rising mists Of incensed passages leading to a yard In growing shadows where life reflects back to life With dates that start and end in chiseled granite, Stone angels keeping watch, upon this night of hallows, Passing through a creaking door, silently closing in swirling fog, To feel an outstretched palm hovering above the spine – Skin rising up in prickly terror with sweating palms, Trembling hands brush at unseen cobwebs -brittle tendrils Touch red hot cheeks uncooled by moaning winds, twisted chaos, Stumbling in a dance macabre of shades when two worlds collide Until twelve bells releases fiery fingers of unheard screams As las animas finds stars upon the other side of midnight. 10-10-20 Halloween Fright Sponsor: Carolyn Devonshire

Had such fun composing this spooky write! But, after finishing it, I had to go look under the bad and turn on a nightlight that night - managed to scare myself! Thank you so much for your visit and congrats. Happy haunting!

Thanks so much Anne-Lise. Remember a treat a day keeps the ghosts away! I think a sweet treat is giving apples a run for their money on Halloween! Hope you are well my friend!

I do love the "spookiness" of the unexplainable on Halloween. Maybe it's my Celtic heritage! Thank you Tom for your congratulations and message. Over Fork Over! Happy Haunting my friend!

It is amazing how our imaginations cause those spine tingling reactions. Sends shivers down my spine too! Thank you so much for your congratulations and your wonderful visits. Remember, on Halloween - Eat, Drink and Be Scary! All the best my friend!

Had to look up Las Animas to learn it refers to souls, Sam. Love the way you describe the graveyard, though I certainly wouldn't want to visit there on Halloween! Congratulations on a first-place win! Best wishes, Carolyn

Hi Carolyn! Loved this theme!! The spookiness of All Hallows Eve has always captured my imagination. There was a very small, historic graveyard behind our neighborhood. As kids we would go in there at night and scare ourselves silly! Much of this poem is based on those experiences. Thank you for the placement and for all that you do here on the soup!

So darkly suspenseful, I like phrases like 'broken path,' 'Stone angels' and 'the other side of midnight' - that is one graveyard I would not want to visit!
