Lady On the Church Steps

I had seen her before in the spring and summer The homeless lady sitting on the church steps She would ask for help from people going into the church She mostly was given spare change and occasionally a dollar or two No matter how small the amount given, she would give a genuine smile and say thank you The last time I saw her was a December around Christmas It was very cold and she was shivering in a tattered, light weight, coat She began to walk toward me and I could see that she was very frail. I hurried to her. I was afraid that her legs might fail Seeing her that way, the terrible reality of her suffering, struck me to the core I gave her all the money that I had with me that day She was surprised and said I want to give you a gift. I will tell you my real name. Realizing this was the only thing of real value that she had left, I hesitated. She smiled, hugged me, and then whispered Linda into my ear. After that day, I never saw her again and couldn’t find out what happened to her. But, I will never forget Linda and her most perfect Christmas gift. Dedicated to Linda

Hello Warren, Yes, it is definitely sad about the homeless. Each person has a story about what happened in their to lead to the desolate circumstances and those stories are lost. Appreciate your story and sensitivity. - Gail

What a heart-touching poem...I shall follow you. The homeless are often mentally ill and cannot find a place for themselves in the world. God will reward you for your kindness. Bless you.

Hi Sherry, It's great to have a new friend. In my opinion, with all of the wealth in the world,, there should be no homeless. I always think of what Linda's life might have been, if she hadn't been homeless. Warm wishes~ Warren.

Warren, oh this is so beautifully penned and so emotional, to see the homeless is heartbreaking always, but at Christmas it seems even worse, hope Linda is okay wherever she is... even if that place is Heaven, well done and congratulations ~

A very touching poem and a story that should be more often repeated. Here's an ironic point: this very evening I edited a poem similar to yours, about a local bag lady (now deceased). She was very independent and would not accept any social agency's help. I should post her story as a comparison to yours. Many thanks for enjoying my "For Men Only." Best to you. / M

Maurice, the plight of the homeless is just horrible, In the richest countries in the world, it just should not exist. I often wonder why someone would refuse help. Probably "to many strings attached" for their liking. It seems that many homeless have a similar, terrible story to tell. Your poem "For Men Only" made me laugh out loud. Thank You. All the best, Warren

Very beautiful, touching story, Warren. I like that she gave you her real name, that she recalled it just for you. Too often despair drains us of everything, the last to go when we feel nameless. The most poignant thing ever given to me was a name I received in a dream. My life was never the same afterward in a positive way. Blessings my friend.

Joe, it was very special that she recalled her real name for me. I knew it was all she owned and that made it all the more beautiful to me. The name you received in a dream must have been very powerful to change you life in a positive way. I'm curious, but won't ask you to divulge the name. Thanks for all of your positive comments.~ Warren
