Author's Notes:  This polemic poem entitled:  "King Vlad Redux -- Second Cold War," is a sequel to the very first poem I posted on PoetrySoup on August 9th this year, named: "King Vlad."  I know that some readers with my first poem probably thought I was writing about Vlad Tepes -- the historical Dracula, vice my real subject:  President Vladimir Putin of Russia who President George W. Bush informally referred to, in former times, as his friend "Vlad," and could supposedly "see his very soul."  Nevertheless, my topic then, and the topic of this poem now is on President Putin and his continued role in violating international law and accepted norms of behavior, and his undeniable role in negatively shaping and influencing the terrible events continuing to unfold in the Ukraine and beyond.  This poem further amplifies the poetic theme I presented in my first "King Vlad" poem, and goes a step further in viewing Putin's current international mischief and misbehavior as part of his greater plan to confront the West and the Free World in general with the seeming intent of creating a new Second Cold War. This is also his prelude oriented toward bringing Russia back to the days of the old Soviet Union with no freedom, no democracy, no real economy; henceforth, a retrograde back to the Stone Age.  With all this, Putin wants to take Russia back to the dark past of former Soviet times, and not lead her into the future with a sense of good governance, enlightenment, and respect for other nations and people.  The ingredients are all here for a Second Cold War.  I hope readers will find this poem to be of interest.  (I used to work as a Soviet Specialist, among other things, when I was with the U.S. military and U.S. government.)  And so my take here is based on professional insight and experience -- and not emotion.  The freedom that we all have as poets and writers would be greatly restricted, if not, nonexistent -- if we lived in Putin's "New Russia."  Something to think about!!  (Gary Bateman - November 30, 2014) (Unrhymed Quatrain poetic format)

King Vlad Redux – Second Cold War Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin’s grimy fingerprints on current history are for him nothing to gloat about—au contraire I say emphatically: His actions bespeak one who’s not an architect for peace—not at all, rather a quite deceitful dictator and a harbinger of a Second Cold War. King Vlad’s old Soviet-style actions are clear for all who care to see, and make no mistake about it—he’s without remorse and a soul to boot. A Master of Malarkey and an International Bamboozler Supreme, he certainly is, with a menacing image and not one iota of conscience. King Vlad risks a Second Cold War with his violation of international law concerning the blatant, illegal annexation of the Crimean peninsula. With his brand of new style Soviet adventurism on the march, the Old Soviet Bear has been resurrected anew—and it’s hot on the prowl again! King Vlad’s new spirit of nationalism for Russia is not at all progressive as evidenced by his current war on certain ethnic minorities: Jews, Tartars, Armenians, Gypsies—to include anyone who chooses to resist and protest against his new age fanaticism rebranded anew in the twenty-first century. King Vlad’s lineage to and proclivity for the old Soviet Union and its star cast of past gangster luminaries: Lenin, Stalin, Beria, Molotov, Brezhnev, and Andropov—to name a few, are quite telling since they reflect the real nature of his psyche and the tragedy he brings now to the world stage. And lest we forget, the innocent souls of the murdered passengers from flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine who cry out, as do their families, for justice from the criminal thuggery and hooliganism perpetrated by King Vlad in support of proxy groups that do his evil biddings soaked in lies, treachery, and deceit. King Vlad takes pleasure in fulfilling a fanciful role today of the old Soviet Bolshoi Nachalnik (Big Boss), whose historical antecedents from Soviet Big Bosses of past fame, doesn’t augur well for future democracy in New Russia, and doesn’t align with the precepts of good governance and human rights. King Vlad’s treachery and deception are certainly open for everyone to see as he executes his plan of disrupting the balance of the current world order. We all should be forewarned of the clouds of tyranny and aggression that could be unleashed one day on the European continent and the world today. King Vlad, despite very strong objections and economic sanctions imposed by Western leaders and diplomats, understands only one word rendered so poignantly in the German language: die Macht (or Power), which lurks ever behind his public mask and psychological makeup as a former KGB officer. King Vlad’s actions reflect his virtues of lying, denying, accusing, rejecting, and criticizing—all poison arrows in his quiver as a Master of Prevarication. His real mask is that of a Monster who had the very best Soviet teachers and wishes to tilt the axis of his New Russia on a collision course with the West. And so Generalissimo Stalin . . . how do you like your nasty little boy now??? Gary Bateman, Copyright © All Rights Reserved (November 30, 2014) (Narrative Quatrain)

Gary,an informative, fascinating sequel indeed. It is definitely great to see this side of your poetry. Your factual output, the history and information you implement makes a very powerfully stated poem. It's frightening, really it is that such leaders thrive and exist. "His real mask is that of a monster who had the very best Soviet teachers and now wishes to tilt the axis of his New Russia on a collision course with the Free World."That's a real shame. I'm in awe.. always, Laura

Laura, Thank you so much for your read and most thoughtful appraisal of this polemic poem. Since I'm full-force writing now as poet and as linguist (by training and trade), I'm very passionate as many of us are on topics that affect our lives and the overall human experience. Vladimir Putin is the "real deal" and a Monster he is, and his very actions threaten world peace. OK -- I'm off my "soapbox" now, and I'm thrilled you liked this poem!! I think I got the message across in this poem!! Best Always, Gary

Gary, I couldnt agree with you anymore than I do and this is a wonderful and fasinating write as well as informative. I have had a really bad gut feeling about him since he visited the US and met with Obama. He is very bold in his nature for sure. I enjoyed this very much. I will have to go back to the August 9 post and read it as well....Sharon G.

Thanks Sharon so much for your read and wonderful comment on this poem. Polemic poetry tends not be the standard fare for most PoetrySoup readers (and writers). And so, I'm thrilled you read this piece. This poem will be in my first book to be published by May 2015. Putin is not good by any measure. I speak Russian, and know the culture and the historical repression from the First Cold War. Best! Gary

My dearest friend, Gary, first of all I bow to your expertise and the knowledge you possess of " King Vlad" and so wonderfully you have presented here as a true scholar, HOWEVER allow me please, for the sake of a dialogue to add certain elements: First He is a Tsar and he corresponds to the Russian psyche that loves totalitarian regimes through out history! As for his virtues do not forget some of them are shared by many leaders. I agree that peace should be preserved! Have visited Russia!

Demetrios My Dearest Friend, Thanks so much for your most enlightened comments!! I do agree fully that Mr. Putin views himself now in a role as a historic Tsar or Emperor. (I call him "King Vlad" more for comic effect -- as tragic as he is.) I agree that there are other leaders who agree with him. I don't though -- I'm a classic Jeffersonian Democrat!! He's a dangerous man. Best!! Gary

Hello "D" -- It did take some time to write this one although it is a sequel to the earlier one I posted on August 9th. This type of poem many will not read because of its academic nature. I have a professional background in Russian studies and the language, and worked in this field in the military. As a writer, I'm very concerned about Putin! He's a threat to world peace for sure! Best, Gary
