Just Plain Words
Would just plain words express a flower’s beauty
in a fashion that moves the heart to tears
and dare to rhyme precisely as their duty
in songs of masters that have lulled for years?
Would just plain words be all metaphorical
comparing features seen through a poet’s eyes?
Phrases leap to ears from pages lyrical
to reach the cords of Heaven… Yes, it tries.
Would just plain words have been enough for Wordsworth
or any poet the spoke in glorious tongue?
Figurative speaking gives the world a new birth.
The poet’s cause has only just begun.
