Just An Old Man

Just an old man, your eyes sparkle blue, as you remind me once again. Just an old man, your smile gleaming bright, is that all you think I am? Beauty, youth and ardor in you is what I see. You can't know my feelings, you could never understand, Your whole life lies before you and I'm just a foolish old man. If you could only see who's there in front of you, really who I am... No emotions left inside of me, they are for the young, nor longing dreams to fill my night for desire, I feel none. My youthful need to touch you, in your eyes, mere perverted fantasies. Just an old man, my life so close to ending and yours at its beginning. Just an old man, my vision growing dimmer, I hate what I've become. 06/22/2017

This one jabbed my heart a bit, James. You have a great, simplistic structure in your work - I particularly like how you did for this one. The single lines, are soulful and heartrending expressions of the heart. Beautiful work once again. Always, Laura

Laura, thank you for your kind comment. Sometimes I like to play with the structure of poems changing the cadence and voice and various other aspects to try to enhance the reading experience.

A poignant but expressive poem about aging! As for myself, I see aging as a challenge because I'm not aging, I'm evolving! You can quote me.

A beautiful thought and a wonderful way of viewing the passage of time throughout our lives.

I love the honesty of feelings in this poem. I can relate. I look into the mirror sometimes and think, when did that happen? I am not that old, on the inside. But guess what. I see older men now as very sexy and handsome, not old. Men can go grey, and even get a belly, and they still look very sexy. I think it's harder for women to age. But maybe that's just because I'm a woman. I'll stop rambling now. Good poem.

touching and sad lines James ... when an older guy looks at a pretty young girl he's considered a dirty old man, yet a pretty young thing can marry a rich old man... and is considered a gold digger. As i grow older I don't care what the other's think of me I'm happy in the skin I'm in:-) hugs jan xx

My husband and I went to his high school reunion a couple of years ago and we both remarked "everyone looks old, when did that happen?" Time has a way of catching you off guard. We age so gradually, that even looking in the mirror doesn't register until we see old friends we haven't seen for a long time. Excellent James! ; )

wow, this is deep and sad. Yes, our soul is so very much like it was decades ago! And the young only see us as "old" But that is the way it has to be. Can you imagine if all the young men married cougars?haha. (a fantasy come true!) Love your poem.

Hi Andrea, it's strange because when I think of women I knew when I was younger they never seem to age. I can't imagine what they would look like now. (Good luck with the hunt, grooowwwwllll.)
