July! You’re here On the Fourth Waving the flag. Mustard stains and blood In step with time’s drummer, Sorrows shared by those who know The cost of Independence Day. The lilting sound of taps at sunset Whispering a prayer of thanksgiving. ©7/10/2023

Line five was fantastic, John. The imagery of mustard and blood standing for sacrifice congrats on my contest.

I'll never be able to share the "sorrows shared by those who know", John, but I can empathize with them completely.

I wish I'd put the word mustard into a poem - that reference (despite my lack of independence day experience) elevates this poem dramatically. Love the contrast in that line packing a punch.
