Author's Notes:  This particular poem, entitled:  "Jukebox Gigolo" is one that I've wanted to write for a while.  The character of this poem, "Zack Adams," is a fictional character of my invention.  He is somewhat of a composite of a number of personality types I've observed over the years in various bar-room settings during my life experience.  Zack, in effect, in my mind's eye is that old style country playboy type who personifies someone way past his prime, deeply and hopelessly alcoholic, and day-by-day and night-by-night giving into the ravages tormenting his mind, body, and soul -- and his very existence as his drinks and smokes himself slowly and methodically to death.  Old Zack's earthly punishment, as this type of person, is to continue doing the negative things he's doing toward slowly killing himself, while continuing to be the "joke of the town" and fading away toward a horrible and hopeless oblivion in the end.  This is not a pleasant picture, of course, since it's fictionally representative of real-life situations that some people (men and women) find themselves in too late due to life style choices and chronic substance abuse.  And so, I wanted to share this deeper view with you, the reader, so you get an understanding of the real message behind this certain character from my artistic perspective.  (Gary Bateman, October 7, 2014) (Rhymed Quatrain)

Old Zack Adams sits a slouch’n so sloppy drunk on a bar-room stool, Wear’n his cheap-threaded cowboy suit and a stained satin shirt. All the while a peek’n and a leer’n at women like an old poor fool, But think’n man tonight—Oh Boy, I’m really gonna hit the pay dirt! Old Zack in this small Texas town is reputed to be quite a lecherous hoot, As he raucously and recklessly rolls old worn quarters into the slot Of the old bar-room Wurlitzer while snicker’n and smil’n to boot, And plays his tearful and twangy jerk-water music while smil’n a lot! Old Zack is this town’s “Jukebox Gigolo,” a real lover boy—Oh Boy! He wears his patched cowboy hat and his scuffed silver-studded boots, Meant to impress young girls and bar-fly floozies who have the Joy! Of being with this bewildering, withered, weathered man and his boots. Old Zack has a fad’n recollection of events and a silver mane of hair, With a cigarette in his hand and cuss’n like a nasty little stable boy, He downs whiskey shots and tequila seconds like no tomorrow on a dare, While chas’n whiskey glass ice cubes and the tequila worm—being so coy. Old Zack while a swigg’n down his whiskey mucho fast and direct, He has now that blind courage to fight or to love—whichever is first, While the old Wurlitzer resonates a rueful hick song for a teary effect, But Old Zack can’t move now for this song has him sobb’n the very worst. Old Zack with his nicotine-whiskey breath and his pockmarked face, Personifies the image of an ideal loser of a man—with problems all, While fight’n, scream’n, and punch’n others to gain some precious space, He’s a showcas’n his reservoir of manly prowess—with problems all. Old Zack was young once and not so wild, withered, weathered like now, And he thought he was a really smart dude—all right moves and all, But was really a man act’n far above his funny fake smart brow, And now a cry’n on his bar-room stool and act’n like a fool before a fall. Old Zack Adams—alcoholic as he truly is and sly and slick as a Texas fox, Is not really so good with his women friends nowadays—for his real talent Is in roll’n those old worn quarters pieces one-by-one into the old Jukebox, Sing’n—“I’m the Jukebox Gigolo”—“a Drunk and a Delight,” that’s real talent! Hello Linda, Best Easter Wishes too!! I've been away from the Soup for a short while as I'm nearing the end of my first poetry book publication. I still comment though from time to time. I should be back with the Soup full-time in May after my book is released. I plan to advertise it on PS. I have a lot of new poetry to post in the future. Best Always, Gary

Hello Dorian, Thanks for your visit here and your comment on "Jukebox Gigolo." I am pleased that you liked this poem. Richard Gere's "American Gigolo" from 1980, I agree, was a really classy film. My character though in this poem is not him. Germany is great. I've lived here off and on since 1990. And I think I mentioned I'm retired here too. Best!! Gary

Liam, Don't tell anyone, but the Leprechaun and I (from my poem "Leprechaun in My Bottle") are actually one in the same, that is, the "same person." And so, I guess when "me imbibes ye ole Irish nectar ("whiskey") my ears do indeed become big and pointy and me nose a tad crooked." All the Best, me ole good friend Liam . . . Gary

Maurice, Thanks for your read on this one my friend. This one did take some time to think through. I wasn't sure how it would be received within the PS community. Regardless, it is very much a snapshot of a certain life experience and way of life for some people that get caught up in these difficulties. Cheers, Gary

Mein gutter freund, Gary, this is extraordinary, you did not only observe Zack but you went under his skin thus make us live very vividly his "exploits"! What an incomparable piece of writing it is! Seven times seven from me!

Demetrios . . . Ich bedanke mich sehr mein toller Freund!! I did observe Old Zack from a composite of people I've met over my life time. And it did require also that I assume his character to see things from his view. If we should ever meet one day, the first glass of Whiskey and/or Tequila is on me!! Talk to you soon Demetrios. Prost!! Gary

I can see you put a lot of work into this one. Great poem. This is a composite of so many kinds of men and they all have one thing in common, they are just sad in the end. Great observant eye you have.

Hi Andrea, I do really appreciate your read on this one. This poem was a theme I wanted to do for a while. Unfortunately, we've all known or been aware of people (and most usually men) who end up in this downward spiral. It is indeed quite sad in the end. A fellow poet like yourself can certainly appreciate the power of observation. It's important for what we do. Best, Gary

Hi Linda (Poet Destroyer!!), Some how I knew you would find me again. I really appreciate your read here. Yup--we've all run into characters like this before. I told Andrea that this was a theme I wanted to do for a while. I had a "mental composite of characters" to choose from when writing this poem. My Best Wishes, Gary

Liam, Thanks for the read here Mate!! I had a career in the U.S. military earlier in my life and met a number people over the years that mimicked my Old Zack character to the tee. They are quite easy to spot. If we should ever meet one day Liam, the first glass of Irish Whiskey is on me. Remember, I have a Leprechaun for a friend. All the Best!! Gary

Hi Gary, I might know this Old Zack, but here his name's Jack :). It's been a long time since I've smelled someone with nicotine-whiskey breath. I like how you added alliteration, with your rhyme. An awesome poem, a straight up 7. Love Linda

Hi Jan, Thanks for your read here. I gave this sad theme some deep thought for a while. I've known too both men and women who got trapped and caught up in this particular tragedy and downward spiral. It is indeed very sad. It was a theme that nagged at me for a while. I had to write it. So sad!! Cheers, Gary

Hi Barbara, Thanks for your read here. You know, you're right, this poem could be easily developed into a good short story. I have some others as well, to include my big evil witch tale on Rosalia, that could become short stories. A zinger ending would be a must!! I gave this poem some deep thought. It was a sad write. Best Wishes BG, Gary

Tim, Amen on this one brother!! I've met and known many Zack characters in my lifetime too. All quite sad, and as you've noted, the end result is always the same. Appreciate very much your read on this one, and I'm glad it made an impact. I've FAV'd a number of your poems as well. Cheers, Gary
