I'Ve Got a Bee In My Bonnet Sonnet

I never enter every contest on soup Sometimes sponsors can be very hard to please Achieving first place is not always a breeze Some don’t like me writing poems about poop Yet every person is unique in our group Some wonderful poets with great expertise Writing different forms with consummate ease To be skilled like them then I’d be cock a hoop Yet people moan when they don’t get a high place Think their poetry is much better than 'mine' Tell the sponsors their judgment is a disgrace It saddens me their feelings are so malign Criticise until they are blue in the face For each of us thinks our poems are divine Written after reading Tommy Boy's recent blog Jan Allison N/A in contest judged on 20th November Submitted to trashed #4 sponsored by Broken Wings 10~17~15 Italian Sonnet - Rhyme Scheme - abbaabba cdcdcd

Big congrats Jan! To me, the Italian sonnet is the most difficult to write but you have done it with ease AND with some great humor thrown in...LOVE the title! - Tim

I love playing about with the titles Tim LOL - I did get help with the meter - am pleased the poem got a second chance in the trashed contest:-) hugs jan xx

Jan, I agree with the first verse, but not the second. I find everyone too good and often remain complexed at my shortcomings! You've written beautifully! Well deserved placement!

I read this Jan. This is good, actually. You are just stating how you feel about all these criticism. What, we are not allowed to state how we feel? Sad that this is still ongoing. I myself have been a victim recently... Well, I was vindicated without doing anything. Take heart, Jan... There is poetic justice after all. hugs!

Yes Kim I think we were both singing from the same hymn sheet about issues here - as we are both aware contests and their judging are a bone of contention - we just have to put up and shut up if we don't place as highly as we would have hoped and there are always the screwed contests to give us a second chance:-) hugs jan xx

G'day Jan... nicely worded Jan in a format I have not read before. Competitions are not easy to win and shouldn't be gifted for any other reason than the poem is great - Lindsay

The judging of contests can be a bone of contention Lindsay - but at the end of the day it is the opinion of one person and there are always the screwed contests we can enter :-) hugs Jan xx

Great Sonnet, Jan, and good advice about the contests here and how we should all feel. For me, they are a learning experience too and a reason to continue writing. Well done! Hugs, Sandra

Thanks Aurore - contest placements are continuing to cause issues on the blogs - I write for fun and if I place in a contest great - if not I read the winning poems anyway to see how I could improve my work to maybe place the next time as long as my poems get read that is the important thing to me:-) hugs Jan x

I hadn't written a poem since I was at school so its been a steep learning curve since I joined soup in Feb 2014 - the more I read and write the more confidence I get and love the challenges the sponsors set for us - win or lose as long as my poems get read and commented on I am happy:-) hugs Jan xx

Contests and judging are a bone of contention Wendy you will see from the majority of comments on my poem that others feel exactly the same:-( I write purely for fun a win is great but I have many many N/A's where I have not placed - as long as my poems get read I am happy:-) hugs Jan

Jan this is a very good sonnet and I love the theme you have chosen. I must admit I'm sick to death of all the whingeing about placements etc. We're writing for the enjoyment not the crown jewels. I take my hat off to those prepared to sponsor a contest and it is an option available to everyone that is a PM. Great write

I write for fun Mark - a win in a contest is a bonus but if I place low or not at all I accept it - I have asked sponsors a couple of times regarding my placement but I would not criticise their decision - the best way to see what the sponsors want is to read the winning poems and see how you could do better next time:-) hugs Jan xx

Jan I respect and understand and agree with what your saying but there is always a flip side and every once in a blue moon the Judge is impartial to favoring a friend, or just not getting it right. I guess your right. You have to write for fun. Not take things so seriously. This was beautifully done. Excellent truth shared here.

In the past I've experience 'selective' judging now I know if I enter a particular contest I am going to place low or not at all but I write for fun a win is a bonus - as long as my poems get reads and comments that is the most important thing:-) hugs Jan xx

First of all the is a tremendous Italian Sonnet, you are to be congratulated on that, and the poem is witty, and yet looks deep in into the psyche of human nature! Since you have been here on Soup I have seen you grow as a poet and this poem is one of my fav's, great form and style!

you are completely correct, Jan, and you are in no danger of being thrown off for writing a truthful poem that does not name names. Since Tommy Boy's blog is public knowledge, there is nothing wrong with saying this is inspired by it. You go, girl!

Thanks Andrea - as I told Tim in my first comment I have written another poem for the contest BUT I think John would have found this quite an interesting contest entry:-) hugs Jan xx

Poetry Soup have been contacted about your poem as it goes against their terms and conditions, plus John Lawless has been informed of this.

Do not read negativity! (I must find and read it - then let it go.) Squeaky wheels are often people with weak egos. I am sorry for your poems content, but I love the rhyme and form. Very good ... CayCay

I preferred Bee in your bonnet sonnet for the rhyme -as far as I am aware there is no rule about the title - my other poem for the contest has a similar name too:-) hugs Jan xx

Hey, Jan - I just realized the contest is called, "Mad as a Hornet." Maybe you knew that and just preferred A Bee in Your Bonnet. Doesn't that sound silly? ... CayCay

It is against the rules for people to write poems like Jan's... There is no weak ego involved, but unfairness that Silent One recognized as he increased my win placement. May I suggest it is better not to write, as you don't know the facts of the case.

The issue over contests gets worse and worse and sadly the blog is not positive and is causing a lot of friction between members - I enter contests for fun a win is great but as long as my poem gets read that is the most important thing to me:-) hugs jan xx
Date: 10/17/2015 1:03:00 PM
Hahaha... Its true though. every person thinks his or her poem is the best...but its the kind of vanity that we cant really avoid I guess :/ Honestly though, the kind of amazing poems you write, was i a sponsor, i would definitely have given you first price over and over... :D

Aww Angie you are too kind - I enter the contests as a challenge and for fun and have many low placements or N/A's - as long as my poems get read that is the most important thing to me:-) hugs Jan xx
Date: 10/17/2015 12:28:00 PM
Haha...Yes judges are different with different tastes. I still have a favorite little poem I wrote and have no clue why it didn't place except maybe it wasn't the judges style or I messed up on a rule.

I am working on another sonnet for the contest Tim but after reading the negativity on the blog I had to get my thoughts down on paper - many of us have N/A or place lower than we would have liked but we just have to accept it wasn't to the sponsors taste that's where the screwed type contests are such a great opportunity to get the poem a second airing:-) hugs jan xx
