It Is No More Freedom
When the hour of freedom
Brought you home
You moved to make way
For the arriving gods
Now freedom's gone, where
Can we go?
You know how much we suffered
When we fled into exile
The suffering that we suffered
Is your suffering
We sacrificed ourselves
Through scorched earth and
Scores of blood
You were not there the night
The nation was born
The whole world for all eternity
Was waiting for that moment
You were not present
When the national anthem and
The flag were hastily approved
In the blindness of our first days
Never again did we see one another
In the same way
Never again did we hear a speech
With the same meaning
Our eyes and ears have
Been removed and
Replaced by the sight and hearing
Of the Ruler
Africa has been generous:
The Ruler has his share of Nature's gifts
Years have continued on
The laughter of a free people
Has gone silent, and has been
Replaced by the mournful wails
Of heartbroken citizens
It is no more freedom
