Into the Sunset

I have the need to feel free like I've got nothing to lose, I just want to get into my blue convertible and cruise. I'm growing tired and bored of this same old abode, I want to go much further than just down the road. I ease my dark sunglasses down over my brown eyes, as the summer evening sun begins setting low in the skies. My hand grips the steering wheel and my foot holds the throttle, as my lips take a long drink from a cold Coca-Cola bottle. I reach over and tune my radio to my favorite rock station, now I feel like driving through every state in this nation. I won't know where I'm going until I finally get there, All that I want to do is enjoy the wind blowing in my hair. I hold my hand out the window to feel the air through my fingers, I wish that I could always be where the free spirit lingers. Around the endless curves my car disappears into shade, far away in the distance my bright red tail-lights fade. I pass by rows of green trees and a thousand birds on a wire, the sky blazes a yellow-orange as if the clouds were on fire. I could not imagine anything better to end this perfect day, than an amazing view of sunset out on this lonesome highway. The air is becoming cooler as the day blurs into night, I feel so awake and alive in the sun's fading light. I keep traveling on down this lonely two-lane road, I drive into the sunset and forget my old abode. May 8th, 2014

Thank you for stopping by, once again, Justin.... We learn something new everyday. And that feeling of discovering new things makes us feel young again, like we are seeing the world for the first time.... I'm happy that you enjoyed this poem.... That was my favorite line too, Justin!

I love being out on the road, too. It's always nice to discover new places, and just get away from it all.... Thank you for the great comments, Jeffrey. I appreciate it so much, and I'm happy that you enjoyed this poem!

I only intend on positive perspective from the readers point of view and that which may help you reach deeper as the artist you already are. You are very talented and I enjoy reading your work. This poem held me again up until the last stanza - I think you could actually leave off because after building me as the reader up - you take me back to where you wanted to get away from at the start - and you did that well. Maybe take the stanza before the last to affirm your escape.(only a suggestion)

Thank you so much for the kind comments, Regina. I appreciate it very much... We do have a similar style of writing, and I think it's a good thing to tell a story with a poem. It does seem to keep the reader's attention more than just a few short lines would.... I will consider making the change to this poem, and maybe take out the 11th stanza.

Kelly- you and I share similar styles of writing --we tell a story in some of our poetry - l don't know if the writers on poetrysoup critique each others work - I am used to having my poems critiqued by some very knowledgeable poets (sometimes good - sometimes very honest)- I found that I was very grateful for the growth it provoked in my writing. I am not satisfied with just saying, "good poem" and congrats because I feel it contributes nothing to you as a writer. Let me know how to comment

Sometimes, the writers do critique each others work here. I don't mind, because I understand about constructive criticism. Some poets like their work to be critiqued, and some may find it offensive. It just depends on the poet. It is probably a good idea to ask them first.

Thank you very much for your kind words, Lucilla. I appreciate it always!.... I wish that you were well enough to join me on this ride, we all need to get out of the house and enjoy being free, once in awhile. But, I think just writing poetry can do the same!
