Urban Sonnet
Invented by: Laura Loo Urbaniak. Sonnet form, with ten syllables per line and a rhyme scheme of ABABBB- CDCDDD- EFEFFF-GG
I’m thankful that I’m a Canadian,
Canada’s the only country for me.
I hail from French-speaking Acadian
Maritimers, that settled by the sea.
In this land of plenty, everyone’s free
to be whatever one wishes to be.
I’m thankful I’ve not fought in any war
and was never forced to kill anyone.
I respect a soldier’s courage much more,
I can't imagine facing down a gun.
And after everything was said and done,
they were proud to go home; their war was won.
I’m thankful for my family and friends,
without whom this would be a lonely place.
And though I’m not pressured to make amends,
foolish mistakes are easy to erase.
It’s not normal to do an about-face
in life, yet hope and faith are commonplace.
I’m thankful to God for so many things,
He’s anointed my soul and given it wings.
