I'm Glad I Was There
I was honored to hold your hand
As you looked to walk to the mystery.
This simple act was humbling.
The last person to be with you
As you took your leave
Quietly, gracefully toward your death.
I did not know you, yet I did.
You needed one with you for this.
It happened I was there.
Aid a life as it enters our world,
Witnessing a life as it departs,
These are profound moments.
The one we have all been through.
The other is waiting for each of us
With our own expiration date.
An unadorned gesture, holding your hand,
This was not a just simple grace.
As many quiet kindnesses go unseen.
It’s not the gesture one makes,
But more the meaning behind it when
We offer a hand to another who needs it.
It is sharing that we are not solitary.
That you are not, the I am not, alone
And never have been.
