If Only I Knew
And time ticks on and moments pass
now, that you are beneath the grass so green
life goes on and fake smiles I make
oh, from this dream will I ever find peace
I reflect- I was not aware of time
and that for us the clock of life would ever stop
now, all I feel is sorrow and grief
oh Dad, I thought we had more years
If only I knew . . .
that the last night, would be our last forever
if I only knew, I would have whispered
I would have told you a thousand things
if only I knew, Dad
that the next morning you would be gone
I would have said, I love you Dad (but you knew)
and shared my heart, if only I knew
I kissed your face in death
I held your hand in mine for the last time
it was cold, Dad, but I held it anyway
remembering my hand in yours as a child
and your lips were cold but I kissed them anyway
If only I knew . . . If only you knew
And time ticks on and moments pass
now, that you are beneath the grass so green
life goes on and fake smiles I make
oh, from this dream will I ever find peace
