I Will Never Forget- That Day

A warm, September day, so many years ago; our home was then aboard a large Marine Corps base. Expecting our first-born with new moms shared, and so my neighbor, friend next door, came over to our place. A favor asked of me; to watch her newborn girl, her little babe, just two weeks old, a precious one, with chubby cheeks and rosebud lips, a tiny curl upon her head. To play with, watch her, oh, what fun! Day after, all went well in early morning hours; drank bottle in my arms then slept in her quilt bed, bound snuggly in her wrap of white with pink flowers. Before long, Mama picked her up, and off they fled. That next day haunts me still. Forever, will I mourn the overnight crib death of my dear friend's newborn. CONGRATS ON YOUR WIN WITH THIS VERY SAD POEM. Back in 1973, my cousin lost his baby daughter due to crib death. I remember how sad and he and I by hand dug her grave.

Very sad, Sandra. The fear of every new parent. I couldn't sleep for days after we brought our first home.

Yes, James, a terrible fear for sure. Since I was expecting my first child at the time, you can imagine, having experienced this first-hand, how fearful we were. Thanks for stopping by. Sandra

A sad piece worthy of a second look. This is a testament to the fragility of life that emphasizes our humanity and vulnerability in the worst of conditions. You have painted a picture with words that educate, sadden and move the reader. Emile.

sorry to hear it was a true story, dear. But amazing you can write about it after all these years. Isn't it wonderful how we can dredge up these things from our past and finally give them voice?

Yes, Andrea, memories are with us forever, and the heart-wrenching ones never get buried too deep. This one came to me immediately when i read the contest theme, "dark and twisted." Sandra

Thank you for visiting my poem, Broken. Yes, I did indicate that it was a true happening in 1958. It was so sad...and although she was happy for us, so sad for her when I had our son a few months later to be constantly reminded of her little one, since we lived so close together. Sandra
