I Shall Sing the Songs of Yesteryear
I shall sing the songs of yesteryear
When word and phrase were understood,
And harmonies were pleasant to the ear
And social norms were ever good.
I shall sing the songs of yesteryear
When love was deep and endearing,
The songs that made my heart appear
To swell with pride when hearing.
I shall sing the songs of yesteryear
Telling stories of folks living large,
Their lives in selfless sacrifice, I hear
Felling giant trees and toting barge.
I shall sing the songs of yesteryear
Sang by the hearth in childhood days,
Songs of God and country here
And think of doing good…always.
I shall sing the songs of yesteryear
The best songs I ever heard.
They live beyond the ages' tear
Without ever changing a word.
