I Need a Better Audience
Oh, you are so funny they said.
Meaning it in every terrific way.
But I did not mean to be.
I was just myself, and became a novelty for a while.
Then I became common, and they lost interest in me
Finding a new comic, one who had fresh material.
My stuff had gotten old.
I was dumped into a trash bin.
I made some jokes to entertain the others
Who had been dumped also.
Some pretended to laugh.
Others remained angry and irritated.
A rough crowd, I told myself.
I need a better audience.
I looked in a variety of places
Always coming back to my mirror rolling my eyes.
