those knots that wrench your gut belong to me
the terror in your eyes, yeah that's mine too
but soon my friend your death will set us free
when the guillotine severs you in two
for heinous crimes against humanity

WOAH! That picture jumpscared me, lmao. This piece is snappy, cold, and fills anyone who reads it with terror! I love it!

Interestingly this poem has received 47 comments of support to date, but got an n/a in the contest. One of the many reasons I have little faith in peer sponsored contests

Fear's a nasty booger

At least the end is quick...one might say, "it's a type of -sudden- death"; but, then again, isn't all death sudden? Ouch. A dark, poetic edge, a creative dive into the macabre, my friend.

Damn! I like it cold. The writing gave the exact emotion on the picture. "the terror in your eyes, yeah that's mine too." Yeah! That's right.

Fear can be a demon. Thx much

That's a great embodiment of that emotion. The picture also heightens the emotion. Well done.

Of course, it's right in the title, and, yes, I remember the contest was to personify an emotion. I think when I wrote my comment, my head must have been severed from my body. Otherwise, my fingers wouldn't have typed such a thing - lol.

Yikes!! Interesting look at shared feelings between the executioner and the guy who ends up being in more than the optimal number of pieces.

It's actually fear personified rather than the Executioner. Thx for stopping by

So many atrocities, so many executions, who does God side with when we are all his children? The guillotine was horrific, and wrong doers punished, blood spurting everywhere - fear abounded but the news in the Middle East now today, is where fear is what all the good and the bad, the weak and the strong, and the young and the old all experience. A compelling, eloquent write. Blessings, Jennifer.

Dear Tom, your poetic pen is ever potent. Intense, chilling imagery with a fantastic last line that can cut both ways. The anticipation of laying one’s head down for the blade must have been terrifying. Warmest wishes my friend.. ~Suze

Nothing to do with politics. I didn't even know who wrote this at the time it was judged. I was looking for fear expressing itself in forms not just related to one aspect such as a specific way of dying. Indeed this is a very well written poem.

In ancient days, from what I hear, they had a brazen bull where the condemned would be put inside and they would be roasted slowly...ouch

...and the guillotine was one of the most "heinous crimes against humanity", in my opinion. I must admit, though, Tom, that I like the illustration.

Love the ironic twist at the end. Who is the most heinous. The criminal or the executioner. Well done Tom. I can't imagine that sinking feeling just before death. SuZ

Tom, a striking take to personify Fear…WHO IS— (at worst) guilty of crimes against humanity…Does he speak this poem to a mirror while trying to lead the case that HE is the one preventing us all fom the doom of nuclear war? He is invisible when he moves through us, thankfully, 4 as U wrote, he is horrid ! Master penning, Tom. Spine chilling
