I Am a Proud Greek Sundial

I AM A PROUD GREEK SUNDIAL I only tell of sunny hours historically, And go back to when I was built, Fifty years before Christ was born, Have been renovated and rebuilt! My name is Tower of the Winds, I live in Agora, Athens Greece, I live at the summit, on top, Tell time and season, quite an eyepiece Lord Elgin attempted to remove me from Greece and take me to Britain but failed, But I the sundial perched high above, Stand proud as Elgin’s actions were curtailed! Entered into sundial wisdom poetry contest 12/2/2019

Wow Paul only 460 miles away! If we go to our nearest seaside resort it is just over 600 km but we do go there at least every 2 months as one of our sons lives in Umhlanga, Durban. I think you will probably visit the the Greek Sun Dial before me. if you do go to Greece, please let me know and i will give you names and places of interest. Thank you for your visit to my page . Poetry hugs, Jennifer

Hi Andrew - I understand it is exciting to actually see it - it was closed to the public for 200 years. It was however recently renovated and opened its doors to tourists in 2016. thanks for the visit Andrew! Poetry hugs, Jennifer.

Hi Careen, Glad you used the female tense, more often than not it is 'he'. Thank you Caren, what I read, said it was 50 BC but it could even be more, perhaps they say 200 but wrote 50 BC as it was mentioned far more often. Thank-you for your lovely comment, Poetry hugs, Jennifer.

Liked your verse, in the days of the empire England stole a lot of things and rightly so should give things back. Good luck. Tom

Hi Tom, Lord Elgin took marble from the Parthenon, but didn't get it right with the Tower of the Winds. A magnificent looking building which I hope to see one day. Thank-you for all your lovely comments, Tom Poetry hugs, Jennifer.

This is a complete weather station, but the sundial is on top. This was closed to the public for 200 years and in 2011 (I think that's right) they began major renovations and it was completed and reopened to the public in August 2016 (know this is right) - have not visited it yet but intend to on my next visit. Thank-you for your lovely comment Nette. Poetry hugs, Jennifer.

You put a smile on my dial when I saw your visit Sunshine Smile. You have an aura about you! There is also another sundial on the ground outside a small cafe in the same area but I wanted this to be true and not fiction, I couldn't find the information anywhere and it is years since i visited the smaller plainer one. Thank you for your kind comment, hold thumbs Anne-Lise! poetry hugs, Jennifer. Jennifer
