Lay
A verse where each line is most often written in eight syllables. A lay poem can consist of anywhere from six or sixteen lines. In each line, there can be from four to eight syllables depending on the writer's preference. The rhyme scheme is usually "AA-BB-CC-DD."
October nights set trees aglow
as Jack Frost's etchings start to show.
Not quite set to pass the baton
Autumn's hesitant to move on.
And Scarecrows flutter in the breeze
while crows come and go as they please.
In farmer's fields, nothing will grow
as nature starts taking things slow.
Colors seem scribbled in crayon,
hastily, as if quickly drawn.
And the canopies play striptease
as temperatures drop degrees.
November shares December's snow
when winter winds begin to blow.
The nights get cold 'twixt dusk and dawn,
alas, the songbirds have all gone.
And soon everything starts to freeze,
awaiting Spring, to green the trees.
