Heron Speak
A heron has no song
if it had a song
it would not be unable to be still enough
to let the fish swim to it.
Only when it takes to the air will it let
its awkward voice loose
as if releasing a pent-up breath.
In the belly of the heron
the fish hears that strange utterance
and remembers what the heron
sang to it beneath its silence
not above it.
Wild animals dislike the noises
humans make with their throats and mouths.
They run from that squawking beast.
If we call to them
we must speak in a language
known only to the blood, a heron speak
rooted in the heart
and not any awkward sounds
crushed into words.
