Heaven Now Felt Empty, Nothing Above
Heaven Now Felt Empty, Nothing Above
An old cobbler, with nails, soles and new shoes
Who could have guessed his deep, malignant blues?
Sign on his shop, "welcome all, come on in"
Happy to serve you and be your new friend.
With his old weathered hands and long grey hair
Voice spoke gentle but one felt sad pain there
Fire took his family, his true love
Heaven was now empty, nothing above.
Days he hammered in nails, new "soles" put on
What could he do, when his was sadly gone?
Heavy heart, he put up his clever veil
Hiding from all, his miserable hell
Why had Fate taken wife and child away
Over each new pair, cobbler cries and prays.

Note- Written about an old man my father knew well, an old cobbler that had lost his young wife and daughter in a house fire(many decades before) while he was in the hospital due to a car accident....
I still remember those sad, sad eyes. And even as a child of eight I could hear the sadness in his voice and see the veil he put up!
I was fourteen years old when my father told me about why the old cobbler was so sad and had been that way for over 43 years....
