Notes About The Poem

Written March 1 2026 for Broken Heart contest sponsored by Seth Pina

Heartbroken

When he told me he didn’t want our baby
I snapped you see went a little crazy
How dare you look into my Black Excalibur eyes
And walk away carefree leaving lies

Heartbroken maybe it was deeper than
Word I can find to describe such a man
I couldn’t be happy not knowing this
Or could I all nappy run that back sis

Sitting at the clinic in a Georgia town
Alone with my baby in my belly brown
I knew I couldn’t do it cut it’s life short
Crying nurses soothing I didn’t abort

But my son still paid the price it’s sad
For in his life was a reluctant dad
Who never did anything no gifts no visits
Heartbreaking for him making me livid

Be careful who you walk away from
One day you will need your son

Dear Karen, l congratulate you on your decision to continue with your pregnancy and not to abort a life. Though he has walked away, God will give you the strength to be a single mother. Hope and pray your son shall grow to be your pride. Congratulations on your POTD.

Thanks Valsa! My son is now an adult and though his father hasn’t changed his behavior the Lord made sure he regretted it. Life is indeed a gift and I am blessed to be his mother. Have a great weekend!

Surely, life has a way to pay one back in time per chance of past deeds. I pray for strength to bear such pains and loneliness. The poem is intriguing...

God has been good to me as I was blessed with a great son who I named. His father had the nerve to request I name him after him a junior! Ha! Never!

Congratulations Karen . When I was in my twenties I believed in cutting a life short until a married couple who were my friends did that. It changed my outlook very quickly. I admire your ethics Blessings Douglas

Dear Karen, what heartbreak, what challenges, and yet what love of a godly mother. Amen! My wife is on the board of a Christian Crisis Pregnancy Center. They help mothers to save their baby and support mothers who have no support, all for free. Congratulations my Dear Sister on POTD! Blessings Always, Daniel

Karen, a great poem, full of raw emotion. Some men shouldn't be fathers and many children are better off without them. Thank you for sharing your story. Congratulations on POTD.

Hi Karen. There are those who quote scripture from one side of the mouth as if they are righteous but it’s all a facade. Underneath that spiel, their intentions are to promote themselves as good guys when it’s not so. Heartbreaks heal more quickly than broken marriages and your son was better off without a father who didn’t want him. He had a mother’s love. Potd exposure points a finger at those who preach God’s word for their own gain.

A heartbreaking verse Karen, you often hear of situations like that. He's not a real man, a real man wouldn't have abandoned you like he did. Congratulations to you on today's POTD honour, well deserved too. Tom

Sad, showing that those whose heart centre is closed cannot give or receive love. Why, even animals show love for their new borns. Such is life, showing its ugly side. Congratulations on POTD, Karen.

Dear karen This hurts my heart, but everything happens for a reason, your son received all the love and learned strength from you im sure, if this is based on a real story, i must say, your words piercingly and in a poetic manner touched my heart and soul. A fave this is for me! For the sincerity of emotions ans sensitivity of the subject youv touched and also profound nature of word weaving! Sending you light always

Yes Inky it is true. I was 21 when I gave birth to my only child and son. I wish I could change who his father is but I can’t. His father is a preacher’s son but also was young at the time. Thanks for the fav I am honored!

What a bum he was, is, always will be... Reminds of Ted Kennedy -- always a bum in the eyes of Mary Jo Kopechne and heaven. One can repent his sins, but he can never erase them. ~ Forever stained (That's me as well.)

Good that his father is not around to model all the wrong things for your son. Way to see that silver lining. ~ gw

On the bright side my son is strong independent and really cool not bitter, not studying his father.
