Cooing of the mated pair brought a smile to my lips. I heard them in the maple tree as I lay beside my husband this warm Spring morning. He stirred and reached for me with a smile mirroring my own.
"Do you hear them?" he whispered in my hair. "Did you know that Bleeding Heart Doves are rare and mate for life?"
"Yes, just like swans, and they're just like us, mated for life. I think their morning ritual is so romantic." I started humming in parody of their soft sound. He quieted me with a kiss.
I remembered that morning six months later. I no longer lived in the same house; too many memories for me there now. Hearing the ritual of that beautiful pair of doves after losing my husband was too painful to bear.
My mind is fuzzy with sleep but not so muddled to confuse it with dreaming.
I hear their cooing ~ my bleeding heart cries as Autumn leaves fall.
