He Is a Liar and a Thief

When he lies It is because his punishments have been so severe, that he knows He saves himself from the Flyswatter, The belt, The whip, The chain, The out-of-control anger Disapproval, disappointment, And wrath By lying. When he steals it is When he is hungry, Or he is sad That He will Never have hope of attaining these things for himself As all hope Was beat out of him A long time ago. He is powerless, he is a child, of an angry, out-of-control parent. Lying and stealing are not what contented, safe children do.

I will never understand beatings; I do know that some people are raised to believe that beatings are, "parental love", as I've known people who believed that. Why can't they think for themselves or do the beatings take all reason from them? Anyway a thought provoking poem that many need to read.

Thank you M.L. I refused to beat my children, which made me very unpopular among my people.

Those last two lines say much! This is not what contented safe children do! Bless the little children for their angels see the God of heaven and cursed are those who hurt them in any way.

That is so sad... so many people don't realize that they are "training" their kids to lie by punishing them for telling the truth. The part "As all hope/ Was beat out of him/ A long time ago" is so touching and true. Perfect closing line, too! Well written piece.

Thank you Rhona. I have read a book entitled "Why Children Lie" - the crux of the book is that they always tell the truth unless something so utterly terrifyingly horrible happens to them FOR telling the truth, and this is when they learn to lie.

Thank you Line. I feel pretty strongly about corporal punishment against children.
