Haiku: Traditional 28

raining cats and dogs star filled sky turns night to day - poetic photos Brian Johnston March 27, 2016 Poet's Note: As a physicist I claim that modern science supports the idea that nothing you can see, touch, hear, taste, or smell, is any more real than your most abstract thought! What we call reality is merely the mind's interpretation of data coming in! Why should pictures presented by a haiku not contain movement, reveal heart, or suggest values?

The father of Haiku was Matsuo Basho born in mid-1600s. Worked as a servant to Todo Yoshitada who taught him the poetic style of 'Haikai no renga' which was renamed 'Haiku' centuries later. After Yoshitada's death, he gave up a luxurious life and wandered around the country. Surrounded by the beautiful nature and seasons of Japan, Haiku naturally consists of a seasonal word describing the setting and mood of the poem.

Though line 1 is a common phrase and brings a picture to mind, it is not at all a normal photograph. But as a moving mental image is it less haiku worthy? That is the question I am raising here.

This a haiku about haiku imagery. There is a 5 7 5 structure here Angeline and rain does suggests a vague kind of season. The issue in this haiku for me is whether raining cats and dogs is as appropriate as rain exploded pool mirror.

------------------------------------------ "another year is gone / a traveler's shade on my head / straw sandals at my feet " (Matsuo Basho) The mind sees the writer wearing straw sandals. The heart understands the conditions and environment of the writer.

The other consistent element of his creation was the two perspectives of looking at one scene. One from the mind's eyes and second from the heart's eyes.
