Graveyard
I hated playing left field.
Like, even on a hot summer afternoon
I’d feel a cold chill
when running across the field.
Not the kind you’d want to sit and enjoy
More of a graveyard eeriness.
It seemed that even the birds
Ignored that particular area.
But then not much grew there either.
Years later I went back
Just to see if that spot was real.
It wasn’t there anymore.
They had built houses
Where the field had been.
I talked with some of the people.
They told me that they had heard
That one of the houses
Was haunted.
I felt that cold chill again.
