Grandma

On that fateful day A piercing phone call came Wrongness vibrated in the atmosphere My watchful eyes caught glistening tears “Grandma died,” Mom breathed A wooden stump I had become, Consumed by numbness. Agony perforating through Leaving countless trails of tears My world forever shattered creating dust The dearest of dearest had moved on. Her lively face will forever be part of the past The intense wave of knowledge impacted and sank in Gone for eternity, simply gone Leaving me with memories — surfacing, haunting Mouth watering aroma drifting out from kitchen The patient tutor I’ve taken for granted Counselor of my rage on those hard-bearing days My anchor during the uneven journey through puberty Vanished suddenly, Permanently. The day was bright and shining, Yet with no bird chirping and no leaf rustling. A powerful, influential woman had passed away Mourning silence enveloped the world A brighter place she had gone I am glad, thoroughly glad But part of me dimmed, consumed by grief, pain and regret Wishing she could hear my rusty whisper “I love you…” Carried away by the wind.
