Geronimo
His real name was Goyathlay
One who yawns
Was not the legendary leader
Of the Chiricahua Apache.
Though appeared to be so,
never a chief but a medicine man was he.
Returning home from battle found his
wife and children dead.
Murdered by the Spanish troops
caused such hatred of the whites
Vowed to kill as many as he could.
Fled to Mexico to evade capture
eluding the troops for a decade.
He surrendered to Gen. Cook.
who wanted to hang him by his head,
He and his group disappeared over night
then surrendered to General Lawton.
Who had had the tenacity to wear the Apache down.
Returned to US with Lawton and officially
surrendered to General Nelson Miles in 1886.
They transported him to Florida, then on to
Fort Sill in Oklahoma, where he died
as a prisoner in 1894.
*Once I moved like the wind, Now I surrender to you and that is all.*
