Notes About The Poem

Studies show that removing a fossil fuel product additive reduced crime world wide. Many factors affect crime statistics. For example, legal abortion may also reduce crime over time. Claiming immigrants cause an increase in crime does not fit FBI data.

gas on the fire

We drove crime and it made us mean
But now we appear more serene
Without exposure
Global composure
Improved with lead free gasoline

Thanks Karen. Hard it is to live in harmony with nature, but some of us try hard to do that. Thomas Midgley, Jr. invented and promoted tetraethyl lead in gasoline. He denied the harmful effects of lead even though he himself was poisoned by it. He also invented CFCs that destroy the Earth's Ozone Layer. If he were a politician, his initials would be D.T. (lol). His bio on wiki is an interesting read about greed and disaster in life. Smiles.

Yes, lead is harmful to our bodies especially to young children and babies. Thanks for sharing this one with us. Sara K

Oh yeah, led free, "we got the led out" ha. Duke, hope you are doing OK, every time I turn around there is a new car lot dealership! Too many cars. I wish poets would ride bikes and walk more often. We are a big part of it.

Anaya....ahh transportation, yes. It would be so nice to have mass transportation to everywhere. It's so much better to take that than drive a car. We are using public transport much more these days. We consider ourselves lucky every time we can use it rather than drive.

It beggars belief that big companies pump out toxic fumes on a daily basis, the dinosaurs got wiped out with a natural disaster and here is mankind speeding up the process to wipe out the human race, profits before health. Hope you're keeping well Duke. Tom

Hi Tom! Amazing what we do in pursuit of profits. I am keeping well, as I hope you are too. We just keep watching what goes on in amazement. We're hoping sanity prevails sometime soon.

IF only life was so simple... There are so many cars and so many different forms of travel, i wonder what would happen if all fuel run out.. I realise we are going towards electric power, but its taking a long time for people to choose this method of travel... Great limerick as always..

Hi SO, yes it is taking a long time to move away from fossil fuels. At least we've removed lead from most gasoline and reduced exposure to a chemical that seems to make more people resort to criminal behavior (if the research is correct). We still have lead in aviation gasoline and the hope is to remove the lead once and for all since it causes harm.

Thanks Maureen. This poem opens up a very abstract concept concerning the relationship of things. Turns out to be complex.

Hello Duke, I am all for the ecology and reduction of crime, and yes, it is interesting how we make claims that are not substantiated. As we say in counseling, correlational data is not proof-positive. Your poem said it so well! - Blessings, My Friend, Daniel

Daniel, you are so kind as usual. There is not a simple answer to cause and effect when it comes to changes in social behavior. Reading some of the information on these studies stimulates thought for sure. Thanks again for being so thoughtful!!
