Full As a Tick

The neighborhood buffet boasted fried chicken and biscuits, toasted, creamy gravy, and smashed taters. You can serve yourself, no waiters. Into the long line you will strut more than ready to fill your glut. Bypass the green salads and soup; run quickly, to the fried foods swoop all you can eat for one price cheap. Pile your plate high in one big heap. If one plate full is not enough, get back in line and your mouth stuff with fried okra and sweet cornbread, rice, beans, pasta, and liver spread. Undo your belt a notch or two so one more bite you can chew. Desserts abound, cookies and cakes, puddings, custards, tarts, and milk shakes. Round out the meal with soft ice cream. Maybe two cones won’t burst a seam. You leave, with a bloated waist thick, well-sated, and full as a tick.

Pity you don't have fried okra. If cooked properly, it is scrumptious! Thanks for the visit Paul :)

Great comparisons with many similes. Title one is, of course, running all through the poem giving a beautiful end. Congratulations!

Enjoyed the buffet.... ! These days I don't prefer going to such feasts where the dessert's galore repulses me as I am on the borderline of diabetis. Really enjoyed your humorous descriptions remembering bygone times when going to such eateries were a thrill . Congratulations Linda on your well deserved win.

Hello Valsa. I'm an organic, from-scratch eater. I've never liked sweets much. My not-good-for-me thrills are carbs and fat - double bacon cheeseburger with fries, no dessert LOL. Thanks for the stop by and congrats! laf

I remember those days when I could eat at such a place and not gain weight. That was before I retired. Well-written simile, Linda Alice.

After over indulging at such a feast one says they will never do that to themselves again when they become so uncomfortable however all that is forgotten when the next feast is in sight. You have expressed this wonderfully in your winning poem Linda. My Midwest mother used that expression but because I dislike those critters so much I never use it. Congratulations on your wonderful win! Blessings xxoo

Hi Connie. Thank you for visiting and taking the time to read and comment on this poem. I appreciate the congrats. It's interesting that your mother used that phrase. Guess it's not as rare as I thought. :) Linda

Hey William! Thanks a mil for catching this and for the placement. I appreciate your sponsorship of such a fun contest. I had to think a while to come up with a lesser known simile - leave it to the South! LOL

Fun poem to read, but a hard act to follow. Best place to eat in the entire "hollar". Those buffets can make a person miserable for days after, but sure is some good eating! The title fit the poem perfectly, Linda. Hugs, Bill

I thought that southern delight is something like pumpkin cheesecake or soul food... not sliced fried Okra... later my dearest Linda you may add fried zucchini or broccoli, or god forbid Brussel sprouts... always Pashang

Hi Pashang. I'm glad you had a laugh. :) Fried okra, a Southern delight, thick-sliced okra breaded in a cornmeal batter and fried. LOL Thanks for stopping by! Linda

Ha ha Linda. I gained some weight just reading this wonderful hurmorous write of yours. It is funny because I have seen this at the Oriental restaurant we frequent from time to time. People go up to the buffet over and over until they can barely get up from their seats to go home. It is like they want to get their money's worth and more. Enjoyed reading and you did a great job in writing and conveying your message...

Many thanks Michael. It is no secret that so many Americans are overweight/obese. I like to add humor to my poems where I can. Life is short. We need to smile more. :) :) :) Linda

I am a foodie so I really adore foodie poems like this one. Also my sisters and I have a genetic thing where we are missing the gene for satiation. Therefore, I can stuff my face almost forever and not even feel full. That's why I avoid buffets!!
