Friends Returning
FRIENDS RETURNING
At the start of spring, birds are coming back from the south,
Wearing exotic chromatic colours
And whistling cheer in our dull wintry world;
Not like neighbours who’ve been out celebrating
And come home with bow-ties askew -
A little hint of good times we ourselves didn’t have;
Or youngsters playing all-night music extra loud
For the enjoyment of the less lucky;
Or the blonde next door sporting an extra deep tan -
That couldn’t be got locally.
Birds are never strutting proudly; only
Wearing elegant suits, whistling rhythmic tropical tunes
That delight our ears with mellow melodies.
They’re just friends bringing us pleasure.
