I just love this Suzette. The form is alien to me but even putting that to one side the descriptions, the comparisons, the nature..love it. Am I right in thinking that 'vail' applies to the young man ducking / lowering of head? Cheers - Gary

To vail is ato show a mark of respect - an old English word similar to doffing one's hat. I like your description better. Gary. Thank you for your kind comment.
