Notes About The Poem

Flies in the Soup

Waiter, there are too many flies in my soup. The recipe has been horribly changed until sorrowfully, now it tastes like poop. It's been watered down and rearranged and that's unfortunate in so many ways. It's no longer tasty, like in the good ol' days. Too many flies keep buzzing around my table. I don't know if I can stay here, or if I'm able. Other restaurants seem to offer much more. Their menus are more appealing and diverse. I used to write poetry at my table by the score, but the AI users don't write their own verse. Images posted are gargantuan in size Glitches continue that serve to bastardize. Visits are waning, fewer and further between. I've lost my appetite for the soup's cuisine. The saying goes, "To each their own," but I won't be throwing the dogs a bone. Real poets lose while cheaters steal a prize when plagiarists continue to enter poems that have been stolen with their greedy eyes. It's all been said and nothing has been done to clean up the kitchen that used to be such fun. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. I prefer Beatles over flies. If you need an explanation for these lines, you're fortunate not to comprehend their meaning.

Lin, I hope everything is blue skies for you. It's been a while since your last poem, so I was concerned. Your poems light the page, like this rhyme here, calling a spade a spade. But your presence lights the city. I miss that. Best wishes.

You laid it on and stirred it in but only intensified the heat. There's much I understand but don't at the same time. Your poem, as always, is well written, impressively so. Soupy

Some should be tossed out for the lack of flavor. Ya know... like the proverbial rotten apple. Thanks, CayCay.

Couldn’t have put it better myself, Lin. I detest the new format… tried to edit a poem today… took me an age to find the edit page. Got there in the end but… SHEEESH! Anyway, enjoyed your rant… i mean ‘poem’ so congrats on POTW. Terry

Thank you, Terry. Not so much as a rant as calling a fly a fly when they pester. ;-)

Well said. There seems to be no remedy however. Now AI generated poems can be humanised by another AI program. Best to sing for an audience of one ~ ourself. Congratulations on POTW with this bold and relevant write, Lin.

Yes, that's true but it's the other problems that can be fixed that are left to fester. Thanks so much for your thoughts, Seeker.

Great opener, at first seems to be about a restaurant, but what’s served up is a “service complaint.” … Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. I prefer Beatles over flies - great line. Filled with humor and seriously, Folks, be genuine and polite. Read others poetry if you want to be read. Congrats, Lin, on POTW! Hugs

Your poem has made quite clear the issues we all suffer from on soup! I suppose the solution isn’t as easy or perhaps soup admins would have nipped it. I enjoyed reading this and felt seen. I found the ai detector helpful but not perfect when using to detect fraud! Congrats on your powerful potw!

They've been made clear by others before me, Karen. The problem is nothing has been done to change the flaws. AI is not an easy fix, but the other issues are more troublesome... at least to me. Thanks.

Dear Lin, I am back to congratulate you on this outstanding POTW. AI has dominated our world oh so quickly. The company I work for as a counselor / therapist now has integrated AI into our Electronic Medical Records (EMR). David K also wrote something very similar about a year ago about flies in the soup. Marketing companies are now using AI to write and create. Every major online company now uses AI. College students who I see and their friends all use AI for their papers and homework. Influencers are using AI to attract viewers and it goes on and on… No easy answers. Autumn Blessings, Dear Lin, Daniel

We now live in a world dominated by those seeking power. If AI gives some poets the feeling of power over others by getting away with it... that proves the ugly truth. Thank you for your open-eyed comments, Daniel. Your eyes are never closed to the facts.

AI is as genuine as the people who use it...fake to the core. Like your poem, genuine writers are unique, personal in a way AI cannot duplicate. Not yet, anyway. I feel your pain. I can spot it, but it is such a waste of time to have to wade through the deceptions. I come to Soup to enjoy other writers -- not to be dazzled by a computer program generated soulless contrivance. From this real person, You get a FAV Lin.

I greatly appreciate your thoughts and you for faving this one, Joe. Most are deceiving only themselves if they think their cheating is not evident. The waste of time is in reporting it to admin, because they say they can't discern it. They had proof of one who was plagiarizing and banned her, then for some reason, allowed her back into the soup.

Lin, you approach the state of affairs here with humor and wisdom combined. It's hard to remain positive, but know that there are a few of us (and perhaps more than that) who actually like composing our own words. I think we can tell who is doing what. Hope you are well and (of course) smiles!!

Laughing is always preferred to crying over trivial matters, and a poetry site is trivial. There's so much more to enjoy in life besides any online site that allows bullies, trolls, plagiarists... you know the story. Thanks for always reading me and sharing your smiles, Duke.

Dear Lin, Oh wow, this one had me laughing and shaking my head at the same time! I love how you turned frustration into such a quirky and clever piece, the flies, the soup, the lost joy of writing, all of it, it jumps off the page. I could totally feel your mix of exasperation and nostalgia for the “good ol’ days.” Sharp, funny, and full of personality. Autumn Blessings, Dear Lin, Daniel

Not all changes are for the better. Thanks for reading me, Daniel. It's glad I am that you found both humor and frustration in my lines. It's something I don't have to live with, so it's trivial, but I just had to put it out there. lol

It's sad to see that repeated plagiarism isn't taken seriously Lin, 9 poems in the space of less than 3 weeks and one of those stolen from a dead poet (with the word The removed) yet its passed off as someone having the same thoughts - hmmm once yes possibly but repeatedly is just pure BS. no wonder folk leave the site with issues brushed under the carpet
Lane Avatar
September 30, 2025 at 6:22 AM
You and others have swatted at the flies, as well as those who have been causing the site's downfall with AI and plagiarism, but the windows are kept open for it to continue. The solution? An admin that abides by their own rules.

Lin, an excellent poem and so true. The soup is tainted and the owner's of the restaurant don't seem to care if the soup is authentic anymore. I am hopeful that someday a new batch of soup will be served and the other soured one will be thrown out along with the AI fakes, plagiarizers and trolls. A fav.

It's gotten pretty yucky in the last year, Tania. Chinese sweet and sour soup is delicious because it's meant that both flavors enhance each other, but that's not the case when open windows to everyone lets in a horde of flies.

"Waiter, waiter....there's a fly in my soup"...."Well keep it down or everyone's gonna want one"....One of my "Mantra" is ...."YA CAN'T LET THE BASTARDS WIN"....soon AI will not allow any "human" poetry to get past its algorithm

I don't doubt that day will come upon us, John. I'm not leaving, just vexed with current happenings that are festering, proving to be more pestering than a fly in a bowl of soup, or the bullies and trolls that persist on insisting they're the good guys. THOSE... I can easily ignore.
