Flamenco is a Spanish art form made up of three parts: guitar playing ("guitarra"), song ("cante"), and dance("baile"). Flamenco originated in the southern regions of Spain, but it's thought to be influenced by many world cultures, including Latin American, Cuban, and Jewish traditions.

Also read a bit more of the history of this classic Spanish dance at this link:

An Excerpt from the article:

Flamenco Dancers
In a flamenco performance, the dancer - or bailaor(a) - will often stand motionless for the first moments absorbing the strums of the guitar, the clapping, and the singing until the inspiration hits him/her. Then he or she will launch into a flamenco dance every bit as passionate as the song being belted out by the cantaor- you can even see the explosion of emotions in the dancer's facial expressions thoughout the performance.

The role of the flamenco dancer is essentially to physically interpret the words - which often express the great lament of the persecuted ethnicities of flamenco's history - with light, graceful arm movements that contrast the reverberating steps as feet drill into the floor with a bewildering intensity. Duets, performed by a man and a woman, are often the most vivid flamenco dances. The dancers keep their eyes firmly locked each other, constantly and aggressively building off one another in what becomes competition of passion, sexual tension, and emotion.

She stands there in the center of the room
not moving! She is focused on the strum
of the guitar. we see pure passion bloom
before our eyes as feelings coming from
the gypsy's song are transferred to her feet,
for she interprets years of suffering
by stamping them into the floor! The heat
of her emotions makes this woman bring
her palms together high above her head,
then stomp with more and more intensity.
She swings her hips beneath a skirt of red
while slender arms are swaying gracefully.
The gypsy singer utters his last cries,
and the flamenco dancer's flame then dies.

Emotional poem Andrea. Two additional poems you may not have read of mine if you are interested: A Final Thought and Fragile Hearts. By the way, you are so prolific I don't think it would be possible to read all of yours (although I've enjoyed hundreds) if you have any that stand out to you I would love to know which ones they are.

I'm sorry, but I simply do not understand you. I have tried copied and paste because to me, that is how one "punches in" a poem to find it on google and I cannot find it here at Soup. What do you mean? why won't you just send it to me in a mail or at least the link to it?

Wonderful winning poem. you sure hit the right notes with this one Andrea. You showed a great knowledge of the history of the dance. Gypsy's(Roma) people have suffered and continue to suffer in all of Europe not just Spain. Congrats on another fine win!

Congrats on your fine win my friend. So glad to see a wonderful sonnet win my friend. This is a true beauty and its depth and soul so clearly evident. Love the image of -- " flamenco dancer's flame then dies". As in life, the hot-dance and in death, the fire expires!
