Final Embrace

Inspired by Edvard Munch's The Kiss IV My humanity bound to your caress Heart and mind a tangled mess Passion and insanity we did compound To your caress my humanity bound The emptiness I hold, the absence of you Held in love yet pain cuts through My heart breaks in ways untold The absence of you, the emptiness I hold Drawn to you still, even as I leave As I sink into your arms I grieve My longing for you I can't distil Even as I leave, drawn to you still We feel everything in this final embrace Your every line my fingers trace I hold you, love you, to you I cling In this final embrace we feel everything 1st Place, Brian Strand Contest

Your poem describes that frozen moment in time of a loving embrace so well. The original painting juxtaposes this 'captured moment frozen in time' with the vibrancy of what's going on outside of the window. The vibrancy in your poem, for me, comes from your clever use of the swap quatrain and your excellent choice of words. Well done. Cheers - Gary

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this. To be fair I get chills reading it even though I wrote it. There is something about how love is heightened by knowing they will part forever given how tumultuous it was for them. I think swap quatrains bring great beauty to emotional poems, so glad I discovered them. Thanks again, your comment is much appreciated:) I should have said this was Kiss IV - I'll update now!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I am starting to find revisiting poems and writing them in another form can hold a different impact - particularly with ekphrasis where all the emotional content gets processed over time. I appreciate your kind words, thank you for taking the time to comment

Thank you! It's a rewrite in swap quatrain form of one I did in free verse and it came together so nicely. I just felt the last line so intensely when writing it. Thank you so much for your high praise. I've done loads of Munch paintings - the paintings emit so much emotion.
