Notes About The Poem

Fickle Love

Though love has never been a friend of mine
She always seems to knock at my heart's door
Convincing me to trust her "one last time"
And promising that she will stray no more

The second she walks in things start to change
My mouth grows dry, I'm weak and feeling ill
She takes control and starts to rearrange
Where once was calm is now a fire drill

But without notice one day she moves out
To leave my life in total disarray
Her leaving simply reinforced my doubts
Avowing that my trust has been betrayed

Heartbroken once again by fickle love
She'll knock again someday, she always does

Hello Daniel, I noticed by your listing of poems that you have a definite verve for sonnets. I've written a fair share too. You might one to try a "Canzone" sometime. It's the precursor format to Petrarchan and Shakespearean sonnet formats. It originated with Dante Alighieri the 13th Century. (I wrote a couple of these recently.) About "Fickle Love" -- you meet this puzzling emotion head-on. And yes, the joy and hurt of love knows no boundaries. Each of us keep coming back. Superb! Best, Gary

Thank you Gary. i am grateful for your visit. I will drop by to check out the canzone and see if looks like something I can do. I have just learned how to write sonnets and am still working to perfect the art. I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment.

Ah, worldly love is fickle indeed...that's why I chose to love God:) In fact, He loved me first:)

I can understand that. But hey, I'm human and everyone needs a human touch every now and again. That's how we roll. Thank you for dropping by and leaving your beautiful smile. I think I'll put it on to see if it looks good on me:):)

Honest and beautiful. I enjoyed reading this very much. If I was you, I would now write a poem with a different ending. Maybe there is a self-fulfilling prophesy to be had...

I'll have to wait until she knocks again. Lol If love comes back I will write about it, you can bet on that! Thank you so much for dropping by and sharing a smile, Kai:)

Your sonnet received so many comments, all of which I read, because it captures an ache all people have known. Man / woman - matters not, it's the human heart that breaks in us all regardless of sex. Get busy, hand the hurt to your Father ... then, when you aren't looking .... I waited decades for my perfect partner and he showed when I'd given up. Your never know! Great poem ... CayCay

Thank you CayCay. I too have quit looking. Like the poem says, she'll knock again some day, she always does. I still figure one day of real love is worth a lifetime of loneliness. My door is always open:)

You need lessons like America needs mor debt. This is spectacular. I'm actually gonna save it. I like how you built through the story while building on the subject. That's so hard to do. Fantastic

That's why we're here! I would like to get away from them but they keep me from totally absurd rambles. Everyone once I step out of the box and I quickly jump in

Thank you, Phillip. I am still learning. You flatter me. I think you write beautiful sonnets. They can be very challenging. I guess we will encourage each other with support. Thank you for your kindness

Kahlil Gibran once wrote if love finds you worthy it will find you..from the book of Frederic..if my love can't hold you no ones can..my first thought after reading a sonnet about something we have all experienced..

Thank you Frederic, I must confess, I've had the same thoughts myself. Knowing that each mush live their own life, finding out later we/they made a poor choice. Either way somebody gets hurt. Always a pleasure my wise and gifted friend:)

Sometimes :( it is time to leave the past behind and start fresh and new. We learn from our mistakes so we try not to do them all over again. Very good Sonnet write on emotions that keep on getting step on...

Daniel, a wonderful write full of deep emotions, you show it is not only women who get hurt, men get used and hurt too, well done ~

Thank you, Constance. Yes, men get hurt too. It's just that most of them keep it to themselves. I on the other hand do not mind telling the truth. I can't tell you how happy you have made me. Not only for your comment but for the visit. Thank you for leaving a smile:)

Reminds me of Emile's recent poem destined to stray, I feel sorry if this is real life for you. I agree with Lin this is one bad habit that needs to be broken. Hard to heal when the band aid gets ripped off constantly. Glad to see you're back on the poetic saddle!Great sonnet! Loved the final couplet as tragic as it is!

My last marriage lasted 25 years, then one day after the kids had moved out she said good bye. I guess that's life in the big city.Lol Thanks for stopping by John. Always a pleasure to see a friendly face. (figuratively speaking) i really appreciate your support. My Dr has a way of making one feel better, sometimes.

Hey Daniel...love this poem and the pic is perfect! But, you know love isn't always fickle...not "real" love anyway. It's just so hard to tell the difference sometimes between lust and love. They say: "Men give love to get sex and women give sex to get love." So what's a human to do? It's all a roll of the dice...and Tim is right: "You're gonna have to face it. You're addicted to love." I know I am too.

Robert Palmer recorded a song using the exact words that Carole captioned above. Leos are very romantic people, Daniel - don't change your nature. I best go get in my proper box ... CayCay

Yes I know! Somebody ought to write a poem or song about it. So glad you dropped in, you've got my heart racing already. Lol Thanks for your time and philosophy on love. I guess I've just never looked at it like a trade. Maybe I need to start, reckon?

And we will chase her because there is no greater feeling than being in love. No matter how many times we have been hurt we still seek it. As Robert Palmer sings " might as well face it. I'm addicted to love." Great write DT.
