False Memories
In the company of strangers they emerge
seeking the heat of recollection.
A guy admits to a part of my childhood.
He bursts into tears as missing
years fill him with forgotten issues.
A women recalls that it was I
that was murdered not she.
It takes decades for her to vanish.
A daughter my heart loves,
turns out not to be mine,
not even human,
but a dog
owned by a man
I once met in a pet store.
I’m just happy that now she's
with an animal lover.
