Fallen By the Side

There you are at every corner Cold with empty cup before you Wishing people blessings and a good day Hungry for attention hoping for a few coins As you watch passersby scurrying about On every side, ignored without a look Just another reject of society Your eyes tell tales of haunting memories And glum heart-broken life history Perhaps dreams turned to nightmares I can’t even imagine your dark world While warm and comfy in my bed Stomach full with hot cocoa in my hand I rarely give you a second thought You measure joy in different ways Human contacts at a different level Every smile and kind word treasured AP: 3rd place 2020 Submitted on January 12, 2019 for STANDARD CONTEST 160 sponsored by BRIAN STRAND Originally posted on January 8, 2018

We can't have retirement followed by mental illness! Your poem wisely touches a soar spot that blemishes our universe and, I have learned, can happen to almost anyone. You covered a passerby-ers thoughts very well and drew me in. Blessings ... CayCay

it's so sad. My sister suffered from bipolar and ended up taking her life in 2010. I hated watching her go thru all that. Good luck, this is a great poem, thanks for sharing ;)-luloo

All too sad. And there's nothing you can do. You can't want 'it' for them. So tragic when life can be so beautiful.
