Fall Leaves
FALL LEAVES
Wind is from the north at last -
Changed from summer’s soothing balm.
The leaves resist the icy blast –
Stubborn stalks with fiery charm.
Each little golden pinnate shakes
As wind bites sharply at its shape,
And to the air it wildly takes,
Flying, trying to escape –
Tumbling, spinning for a while,
Rises slowly, drops like tears.
A final fling for another mile
Then falls to rest with all its peers.
Widely under this fall bough
Of laden yellow leaf
Spreads a sorry carpet now
Of summer come to grief.
