Restless nights and guarded days; makes it clear that you have strayed. And you vow to mend your ways, yet, sins await penance paid. Years of lies shadow the past, cast by promises pending. And good times go by so fast, you realize they're ending. Months quickly morph into years, pressures build, and nerves get raw. And laden with fears and tears, failing dreams start to withdraw. Today is left to fate's whim, as forever friendships break. And passion's flame is so dim, all you can see is heartache. O'er the years, even hope frays, time cannot postpone old age. And you're running out of days till your soul must leave life's stage. (Quatrain) 2/4/2016

... one can certainly try to deny their age! I know a couple on this site that do just that with their youthful spirit. Enjoyed the whole piece, but your last stanza was the best. I think one should be encouraged to follow those elusive trails, no matter their age. For some the cage is physical, and others its mental.

In our minds we may age, but we don't see ourselves growing old. The heart can love just as deeply in our winter years as it can in spring. I love the photo that accompanies this poem. It goes so well with your wonderful poem. I hope I am never in that cage. Cheers, Connie

Thank you so much Connie, your comments are much appreciated. You, like I, will always be young in my mind, old age doesn't need to be a cage. Emile.
