last year around the same day in March, at dusk, darkness descending... I heard a lonely bird cooing in the saddest tune, as if she was waiting for her mate, who promised, but hadn't returned yet. I hear that croon today evening again - while resting alone beside my window, and watching scintillating solar lights on my front fence...haven't switched off the lights yet. bird crooning sadly darkness falls soft on hard ground solar lights twinkle March 19, 2021 FIRST PLACE Inspired by "All yours - March 22" Poetry Contest Sponsor: Brian Strand

I have wondered what would happen to the eggs if the mother or father bird died. Would the single bird try to hatch, feed and send the babies off on their way in life? Of course, if one doesn't show up then there wouldn't be a nest, etc. Some species mate for life and suffer grief just like humans if one of them dies. Sara

Dear Sara, so profound thoughts. Recently I am also watching bird habits very closely, and very often my poems have images about birds. After reading your comments, I remembered a short verse or a sloka I read about - it's from Ramayana, the epic story from India. It's about two birds, of which one was hunted with an arrow. Not enough space here to describe. BW ~ Mala
