Ducks

DUCKS Was it some sort of omen? A northern albino cortege of two? Two big white ducks (understand these were not geese) Two BIG WHITE DUCKS showed up in our backyard just yesterday I’ve never seen their likes before Nor even at a zoo One follows the other at a consistently exact interval, Whether picking at remains of bird bread on the picnic table or waddling around through our backyard’s ground cover They might have been foraging for something but not necessarily food The closest water – a river – is over a mile away A lake? A lake – let’s say five miles Someone’s pets come to mind Pet? Not in this low-income neighborhood No I think they were an omen A message sent by God Boreas “Prepare! The winter will be long and hard”

Ouch...could have been a sign, Daver...what a long and harsh winter we'd had.:( They might have been a blessings to you...they were white.:) We'd had a duck come here a few years ago...but it was a gift to our neighbour's grandchildren. They'd kept it in their basement...but couldn't stand the smell. When the ice melted, they pushed it into the water. It climbed out and was adopted by the neighbours across from us. Fiona..with feathers. Best wishes, Love, Mikki

oh, my, I thought you were gonna say at the end for your message: "Prepare, you shall have duck this thanksgiving instead of turkey" hahahahaha. I really enjoyed this one and your comment on watching couples dancing at the prom. You are a laugh riot! Luv, Andrea

Nice suprise, nice images. May have known yours was a safe yard to take a rest. Poet lives here. Doesn't eat duck.

Look upon the ducks as a good omen, Daver. Everytime I'm blessed to see one of nature's special creatures unexpectedly (like sea turtles when out fishing), I feel blessed. Now don't go thinking up duck recipes for the holidays. LOL Your poem made me smile. Thank you, dear friend! Peace and joy, Carolyn

Good one..We as poets notice these things..At the City Pond yesterday there was two white ducks and some brown ones.. There are usually some Canandian Geese that hang there but these were ducks ..I was wondering also where these ducks came from..I am glad that I chose this one to read this morn..Better get prepared for that long cold winter...Sara
