Dressing Death
DRESSING DEATH
Snapshot of a corpse ~ head unnaturally leans into the glass
death is not kind, though dressed up, with makeup, scented flowers
a woman decorated in autumn foliage holding rosary beads ~
more like a doll than real
in a warm room with kith and kin. stains of death remain on cheeks
a twenty something man dressed in green sunday suit ~
his hand is deathly cold
sleeves, shoulders. black dresses and suits sully the noisy river
a teenager without her horse and glasses ~
how will she ride? how will she see?
she followed a classmate to the grave
sleeves, shoulders. black dresses and suits sully the noisy river
leukemia claimed a neighbor who rode the yellow bus
the quiet remorseful corners. can you hear the breaking off of hearts?
a little girl with pretty hair dressed in brown asleep
in a girly-pink satin-lined box
they weigh down the coffins ~ pinning them six feet under
lady who trimmed ten years from her life, while standing on two feet ~
sweats ninety inside a closed box
twins shooed off, to visit dead neighbors, at the funeral parlor
